Fabled Lands RPG feels more modern to me than the other three, yet it still has all the flavours and depth that I love about the other three too.įabled Lands is a 180 page softcover book. Its youth can be seen as a disadvantage, but it is also an advanatage. Those who do know of it are just as enthused, if not more enthused, by its return and the related RPG as any of the other three. Unlike Dragon Warriors, Lone Wolf, and Advanced Fighting Fantasy, Fabled Lands does not quite has the same legacy given that it is much younger.

Though none have been amazing commercial successes, they have all received support in terms of further books and a fanbase of old and new has begun to form. Dragon Warriors, Lone Wolf Multiplayer Games and Advanced Fighting Fantasy have all returned to the RPG hobby. The last few years has seen both gamebooks and the related RPGs see something of a revival. Alongside this release has been the release of the first two books on an iPad app by Megara Entertainment and a Roleplaying Game by Greywood Publishing. Unfortunately, only 6 of the 12 books planned were published but with the current revival of gamebooks, the first four books of Fabled Lands have been released again to test to see if there is a market to complete books 7 to 12. It was a sandbox fantasy RPG campaign turned into a gamebook. Instead, each book covered a region of the world and you could travel around freely, creating your own story. It was unique in that it did not present a single story line.

Fabled Lands was a series of gamebooks released in 19, right at the end (or even after) the solo gamebook era. Though there is no particular innovative elements either in terms of the mechanics or setting, the overall package is well designed and playable.įirst, some history. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case with the "Virtual Reality" books.Fabled Lands is a solid fantasy RPG on all levels. (Speaking of style, I recently discovered that the french translations of the "Blood sword" series reduced the original text a bit. The description of the frozen remnants of civilization is very powerful and the style is, of course, a great part of what makes your books so enjoyable.

"Heart of Ice" has an excellent post-apocalyptic atmosphere, many wonderful characters (I don't think any other gamebook even comes close in that regard) and very original endings. I can't really say whether I like it better than the two other VR books I've read. I, of course, love the book (I'm much too lazy to translate something I do not really love). It took some time, but the readers certainly thought it was worth it ! The translation didn't include the illustrations, but I've just provided a link to this blog to the french gamebook community I'm a part of, so the readers can finally see what Vajra Singh and Gilgamesh look like ! Since most French aren't so good with foreign languages, I decided to write a translation. I was quite disappointed when I discovered that some of your VR books had not been translated and I managed to buy "Heart of Ice" via Amazon (to my great sadness, "Twist of Fate" - which hasn't been translated into french either - seems almost impossible to find). You're my favorite gamebook author and I had really enjoyed "Down among the dead men" and "Necklace of skulls".

except I didn't know how to contact you (I just stumbled across this blog right now). I would of course have told you about it. I'm the one who translated "Heart of Ice" into french. You won't need dice, you won't need a pencil.

The quest for ultimate power will take you across a dying world, contending with monsters, mutants and desperate men, to the haunted city of Du-En in the midst of the Saharan ice wastes. The greatest heroes of the age covet the Heart for themselves, and the race is on. The power to make yourself lord of a new creation is a tempting prize. It has the ability to shape a universe, the one who touches it becoming mankind's savior and wielding the power of a god - or a devil. Mankind's last glimmer of hope is the Heart, a crystalline meteorite thought to have been forged in the Big Bang. But Gaia has gone mad, and instead of a paradise she has made of the world a frozen hell.

The cause of this slow death is Gaia, the AI satellite system designed to regulate Earth's climate. Only a few million humans are left clinging to existence as the weather worsens and ice tightens its inexorable grip on the planet. In the twenty-third century the world is dying.
